Need some great ways to celebrate the 4th of July at home this year? Well, Independence Day is coming up and due to current events, such as social distancing guidelines for COVID-19, you may be wondering what the heck you should do this year. You definitely want to have a backup plan if your town’s usual large & crowded 4th of July events end up being canceled or made to be less fun with extreme distancing requirements. I don’t know about y’all, but if watching fireworks with a beer in my hand downtown requires me to stand 6 feet away from others and wear a mask, I am not going. πŸ˜‚

Even if 2020 wasn’t a complete hot mess, there are tons of ways to celebrate the 4th of July without being in a sea of people any year! Whatever you end up doing, just be sure to activate your patriotism in every way possible to celebrate the greatest country in the world!

Here are some ideas to help your switch things up this year.

1. Have a Backyard BBQ/Cookout

When the weather permits, having a classically American BBQ is always a fantastic idea. You make your own rules, your own food, your own drinks, and don’t need to social-distance if you don’t want to. Celebrate your freedom of all kinds of choices with this option. 😎

Here are some fantastic 4th of July recipes that would be a star-spangled hit!

Firecracker Dogs ⭐

Patriotic looking food is always fun, especially when it is SUPER easy to make with only 3 ingredients and a pack of skewers.

Red, White & Blue Deviled Eggs

One of my favorite holiday sides are deviled eggs. I think they are called deviled eggs because once you have one, you want another, then another, than another, then another….and all self control goes out the window because of the bittersweet temptation.

When I saw the picture of these, I was like “Oh man, that looks like a lot of work”, but it is actually just as simple as dying Easter eggs.

Strawberry S’mores πŸ“

So these caught my eye because of the unique combination of strawberries and s’mores! I love trying new things, so this is a recipe that you can serve to really perk up everyone’s taste buds. Plus, they look so pretty!

What I also love about this recipe is that there is so much room for creativity. For example, you could use white chocolate with a blue dye to make blue chocolate. That would be a great way to add blue into the appearance of the strawberries to keep the 5th of July theme obvious. Or you could get the toothpick ends they use in the photo to add blue into the picture! πŸ’—πŸ€πŸ’™

if you think you’ll have trouble finding toothpicks like the ones above, there are a lot of other options, including these USA Flag toothpicks.

There are tons of recipes out there that are ready for you to make for the best backyard cookout ever at the following links full of great things to make, including grilled corn on the cob, Strawberry Balsamic Pasta Salad, classic potato salad and more, here: Delish

OH. You can’t forget the drinks, so also consider making delicious red, white and blue vodka lemonade that you can also make into a slush to help beat that harsh summer heat.

2. Rock a Patriotic Hairstyle

A patriotic hairstyle? What? I know this is probably not one of the things you expected to be on this list, but aren’t you glad it is? I think you’ll like these. The following styles are super cute additions to your festive clothing you may plan on wearing as well.

Red and Blue Ribbon Braid

This one is so stinking cute for a child or an adult. Ribbons are a fun and easy way to add some color to your hairstyle without using messy temporary dyes.

Upside Down Braid Bun with USA Bow

Well, I never thought I’d ever say this but this hairstyle is just as cute as Aaron Carter‘s patriotic looking album cover from 2000 (the same album I used to give good night kisses to because I believed he was going to be my future husband – HA!)

For this one, it can be difficult to figure out how to position yourself to do another persons hair but the photo below is also from the following link that gives you a few pointers on that specifically: A Girl and a Glue Gun – Upside Down Braid Bun

3. Revisit American History

Let’s face the fact that most of us do not know enough about our wonderful country’s history. To appreciate the present, we must be knowledgeable about the past, which is definitely something I want to work on myself.

There is an awesome timeline here on the “World Digital Library” that gives you important milestones in American history, dating all the back to 1492. It is in an easy-to-read, slideshow format and features visuals with each page, making it actually fun and interesting.

Learning doesn’t always mean you have to read, so consider this free and available documentary titled “The Story of America“, on YouTube, which gives you a refresher course on how far we have come. Check it out below or click here.

4. Hang up Ol’ Glory

Who else feels super happy when they see a big, bright American Flag hung up in someones front yard? I know I do. it is a great reminder each time we see it, that we are all Americans sharing this great land always ready to unite when terror strikes.

They sell complete flag hanging kits on Amazon, giving you a patriotic activity to do if you don’t already have one flying.

5. Make Some 4th of July Slime

Okay, this idea isn’t a common practice specifically for Independence Day, but it is a great idea if you will be celebrating with any kiddos. Even for adults, this would be fun to make and even keep to use for stress-relieving purposes in the future. Plus – IT IS SO CUTE.

Get the “recipe” and directions for this sparkly slime here: The Farm Girl Gabs – Patriotic Slime

If you aren’t digging the idea of a DIY project, you can buy it already made too. Then you can divide it all into little containers to hand out to everyone to play with.

Get a cute jar of the putty you see below, here: Fourth of July Slime.

6. Buy Something Made in the USA

By this, I mean celebrating the 4th of July by buying something that is made in America to support the great businesses in America. This is a great way to celebrate America and it’s business owners.

For example, this great company, Homesick Candles, make this beautiful USA candle that was made right here in America! πŸ’—

They even have candles for your specific state as well. Check it out here: Homesick Candles

7. Register to Vote

Whether you register yourself or convince someone else to register to vote, you’re doing a great deed for our country by promoting the wonderful right we have to vote for our officials. By exercising that right, we can be comforted in knowing that those who fought for the rights we have now have not been taken for granted. Every year there seems to be the same trend, in that only around half of eligible voters show up to he polls.

Help change that by directing people to register to vote here: Do Something – Register to Vote
