So, I am a Netflix-addict – I have become addicted to many amazing shows that they offer and last week I needed a new show to start and came across this:

LezWatchTV

I watched the trailer, read the description, and was inspired to watch it after learning that in the show, it takes place in 1996, at ‘Boring High School” in “Boring, Oregon”, where the kids who do the school’s morning news end their segment with the phrase “Have a Boring Day”, which also correlates with the title “Everything Sucks” and you can’t “fast forward” high school.

Now, in 1996 I was in Kindergarten or 1st grade, so I don’t know what high school was like in the 90’s but even if you didn’t, you are likely to remember a lot of the music, the slang, the fashion, technology and lack of technology. This show is pretty much a must-see for all millennials! Blockbuster anyone?

Not sold yet? Read the plot description here:

Everything Sucks! revolves around students at Boring High School in Oregon in 1996. It centers around the A/V club, and the Drama club, and both groups are set aside as misfits. Luke O’Neil, is a freshman at Boring, along with his best friends, McQuaid, a pessimistic geek, and Tyler Bowen, a squeaky-voiced, immature teen. Immediately, the boys are seen as social outcasts and join the A/V Club, where Luke develops a crush on Kate Messner, the principal’s daughter and a sophomore at Boring. Kate, however, starts questioning her sexuality and develops a crush on drama student Emaline Addario, who is dating fellow drama student Oliver Schermerhorn. However, Kate starts dating Luke after rumors of her being gay are spread around the school.

When an accidental destruction of the sets, inadvertently caused by Kate, causes the play to be cancelled, Luke and his friends suggest the A/V Club and Drama Club make a movie together, which would then be screened to the whole high school. Meanwhile, Luke deals with discovering VHS tapes that his father made before leaving him and his mother years prior. Throughout the season Luke’s mother, Sherry, begins to grow close to Ken Messner, Kate’s father and the principal of Boring, and Kate is struggling with her identity and sexuality, Tyler struggles with his friends’ interest in girls, and McQuaid develops a crush on Emaline, only to be rejected.

Still not sold? Okay, well, you need to be! Go watch it now. NOW. I am eager to get you to also become a fan because, well, Netflix isn’t renewing it for a 2nd season and those of us who have seen it, simply NEED MORE. The fact is that this show doesn’t suck, and EVERYTHING’S AWESOME about it. It is a comedy, but it still exposes real-life issues that relate to the awkwardness that high school makes us face, like figuring out who we are and who we want to be. It isn’t a cheesy kid’s show either, so even if you are an 28-year old fart like me, you can enjoy it!

Okay, so perhaps you need a little more inspiration to start watching the show. You see, the goal here is to create more “Everything Sucks” fans so that enough people can peer-pressure Netflix into giving us a second season. JOIN ME in doing so by checking out some of the most memorable/nostalgic things that are featured in the show. (No Spoilers, don’t worry!)

1. Oasis – Wonderwall

Remember this song? If not, you definitely will when you see the show and connect with Kate Messner’s character. Go old-school and get the CD: Time Flies…1994-2009

Perhaps listening to the song will give you a little bit of a nudge:

2. CD Players

L-O-L. This is hilarious. Luckily MP3 players came out shortly after, but I do remember owning one of these babies. Scratched CD’s skipping, no ability to shuffle the songs, and if you wanted to put it in your pocket, you’d better had made sure you owned a pair of JNCOs. (Which, I didn’t, thank god). If you want one, you can still get one though: Personal Portable MP3/CD Player

Here is a sweet GIF of Oliver from the show, listening to some tunes from this now foreign device!

Tech Crunch

3. The Fashion

Check out her plaid pants. Her miniature backpack-purse, the big black boots, and the hair-do that SCREAMS 90’s Gwen Stefani!

If you are super inspired by the look, get them pants, girl! Here: Red Plaid Print Skinny Leggings For Women

Fashionista

In case you needed a reminder of 90’s Gwen:

4. Big-Ass, Slow Loading Computers

There is a scene in the show, where these kids are surfing the net and, LEGIT, it does exactly what a 90’s computer would do – loads……very…….very…….slow. It is quite hilarious. It also makes you SO grateful that technology has sped up! You can bet your bottom dollar that this computer does indeed SUCK.

Nerdevil

5. The Scene where the Conversation at Lunch is about Alanis Morissette’s Song Logic.

This is everything. This is hilarious. Listen to the song here for a refresher: Ironic

Tyler: You’re out of your mind! Luke, settle this.
Luke: Settle what?
McQuaid: That ridiculous song. Winning the lottery and dying the next day? The subject is 98 years old. There’s nothing ironic about dying at 98. Rain on your wedding day?
Tyler: It’s ironic because they chose that day to get married!
McQuaid: Well then they’re morons, and they deserve each other! Do these people not have five day forecasts? What kind of fairy tale world does Alanis Morissette live in?
Tyler: Canada!

Did I mention that the drama and A/V kids on the bus start geeking out to Ace of Base in their scrunchies and fanny packs? Well, I just did. So, have a listen to this other 90’s hit that is a big part of the show:

So, wanna know what’s crack-a-lackin? This show….AND the fact that you need to watch Season 1, and then sign this petition to re-new the show!!! You know you wanna! Give into the peer pressure, be ALL THAT and a bag of chips, be freakin’ awesome and add your name to the list of petitions below:

  1. Netflix Season 2 for Everything Sucks
  2. Renew Everything Sucks
  3. Petition: Renew Everything Sucks

If you love the show, or even if you have never seen it, and signed it anyways, thanks! I hope I can update this post someday with news that ROCKS, which obviously would be Netflix releasing a decision to renew for season 2! *crosses fingers*

Now, look, home slices, go watch ‘Everything Sucks” now on Netflix: Everything Sucks
