Zodiac signs and gossiping about astrology used to be mega popular! Most of us grew up reading our horoscopes in tween magazines, like J-14 as a kid. We read our horoscope by identifying our zodiac sign by our birthdays, thought that it had all the answers to who we were and who we were meant to be with. I remember being heartbroken as a child, that I didn’t share the same zodiac sign with Christina Aguilera, but did we ever look any deeper as to what exactly it is?
Whether you believe in its validity or not (I have always considered it a fun thing to follow, as I am not a hardcore believer in your zodiac being able to define you or predict your future), you should still know the basics, what your sign is, and why it is so popular. 🌙
Let’s open up this post with the definition of a couple of important related terms.
Astrology

1: the divination of the supposed influences of the stars and planets on human affairs and terrestrial events by their positions and aspects.

The Difference Between Astronomy and Astrology
Some may find it easy to confuse astronomy and astrology. At one time, these two words actually were synonymous (that is, astronomy once meant what astrology means today), but they have since moved apart from each other. In current use, astronomy is concerned with “the study of objects and matter outside the earth’s atmosphere,” while astrology is the purported divination of how stars and planets influence our lives. Put bluntly, astronomy is a science, and astrology is not.

Zodiac
I am a Scorpio, (born on October 30th). Even though you probably know your zodiac already, read the definition to get a more in-depth explanation besides “the sign that is assigned to my birthday”.

1: an imaginary band in the heavens centered on the ecliptic that encompasses the apparent paths of all the planets and is divided into 12 constellations or signs each taken for astrological purposes to extend 30 degrees of longitude.

One of my favorite zodiac products are these pencils! When you need a small, but perfect gift for someone else, or even yourself, these pencil sets are fantastic!
