Do you know what’s better than renting adult videos, drinking mimosas and french-kissing pillows, or mixing cocktails out of a sailors mouth? (Thanks, Blanche) A blog post about the best show ever to exist – “The Golden Girls!” I am actually waiting for it to come on after this “The Nanny” marathon is over. (Thanks, Logo).
So, I have to admit – I didn’t start watching Golden Girls until, well, this year. (Yep, 2018). I used to always switch the channel when I heard the theme song because I felt like I wouldn’t like it since it’s about 4 old ladies. Boy, was I wrong. So, do me a favor and give the show a chance if you have never seen it. You. Will. Not. Regret. It. I. Swear.

Golden Girl Facts You May Not Know
1. Bea Arthur (Dorothy) actually hated cheesecake, even though it was an essential part of the show. They went through more than 100 cheesecakes in the series!
2. Estelle Getty (Sophia) was actually a year younger than Bea Arthur (Her daughter Dorothy). She had to spend an hour getting ready in efforts to make her look older.
3. Bea Arthur is pretty hardcore. She was one of the first women to sign up for the women’s reserves before World War II as a truck driver. She also liked spending her free time hunting with her .22 caliber and bow and arrow.

5. Queen Elizabeth loves Golden Girls! They even performed for the Queen in 1988.
6. As of February 20, 2018, the only remaining living Golden Girl is Betty White (96), who was actually the oldest of all the girls.
7. Estelle would have preferred to play a Jewish woman, rather than the Italian woman she portrayed on the show.
8. None of the Norwegian sounding lines from Rose were actually Norwegian. The fact that the lines were just gibberish made the show more comical – and effectively so! I’d say that is such a Hefenwaffenslaggenhoffen.
9. It took 9 hours to film ONE episode. Crazy, right?
10. According to Parade, Estelle Getty had a horrible case of stage freight:
“She had an awful time remembering her lines because she would freeze and panic,” she said. “She would start getting under a dark cloud the day before tape day; you could see a big difference in her on that day. She was unreachable. She was just as uptight as a human being can get. When your brain is frozen like that, you can’t remember lines. I would always say to her, ‘Now listen, Estelle, here’s the way to do it. Don’t try to think of what word comes after what word, think of the picture and tell the story,’ but she was so scared that she couldn’t. She couldn’t think of her name, poor little thing.”
